Decidely high up on the Franschhoek Mountains, commanding a spectacular view of the Valley, the setting is a true reflection of the estate’s name, which translates as ‘a gift from God’. It is loosely pronounced “dew donn-ay”. Three centuries after the first French Huguenots settled in Franschhoek, French-Mauritian Robert Maingard acquired Dieu Donné vineyards in 1987 in search of his French roots in South Africa. As a tribute to his heritage and the intrepid spirit of the first Huguenots in the Cape, Dieu Donné features the Croix de Lorraine in its logo. With its distinctive double bars, the Croix de Lorraine has been a symbol through the ages associated with the spirit of non-conformity : an apt logo!
High on the steep southwest facing slopes, the sun is tempered ensuring slow ripening of the grapes. The unique strata of Hutton and Clovelly soils over weathered granite with a rocky top soil is found only in this corner of the Valley. As a result, the vines do not show excessive vigor.
